Cyclocross racing preperation

Ok, so May seems a little early for Cross Season... well maybe.. but I have a bit of work on my hands to start setting up some cross courses that will light the pants off the local cycling crowd and keep them interested in racing here in Bend rather than hoofing the hill and racing in Portland.

2 of our races have solid location capabilities.. probably to produce one of the most "Euro" feeling cross courses.
The final location is a bit of a stretch... The snow has just melted up in those hills, so I am waiting a few weeks to start observing the brake bumps and dust build up... as well find the best spot for runups etc in either rain, snow, or mud. The higher altitude locations seem like a pretty solid snow area, but one never knows from year to year.

Just for fun, I have been cruising around forums reading about complaints on courses etc and then trying to find matching videos in youtube (harder than it sounds). Then I watch what might of gone wrong. Crazy stuff going on out there... some races I would like to attend just to see the craziness!

Dusting off the cobwebs of life

This winter was a tough one to find time to ride. I did ride, just not much.
With a new baby who needed lots of daddy time ride time had to be sacrificed.. and for real sakes it is sort of part of the job.

Now that the sun has melted the snow, interest in riding my bike has peaked again. The rides into work have been "refreshing" to say the least with the spring cold headwinds and sandy shoulders.
But this morning the street sweepers were making headway and cleared the snow eating cinder from the shoulder of about half of my ride. Sadly they move too slow for me to tuck in behind and stay out of the wind. The wind beat me up this morning and I am sure it will do it again on my way home.

The good news it that I took my baby girl (now 10 months!) out for a spin in her Burley Trailer... Sweetness.
Then we bought her a helmet.. not so sweet. She doesn't like it too much.. but with a little daily coaxing of daddy wearing the helmet around the house and then putting it on her head for a few moments she will come to love the micro brain bucket. And Ride WE WILL.

2009... and at least 3 cross events in Bend?

Freshair will have its 3 series (still in planning)
Webcyclery has their weeknight events
Central OR racing has their Sat race too...

And Beer at them all? After all this is a Micro Brew beer town.

And what about NATZ? Bend is in the Running! It is a long shot, but Bend has some great potential for a Huge race and fun times.

09 is going to be a season of sponsorship challenges

For racers and race promoters alike, 2009 is going to have some serious challenges.
Loose pocket books are not likely, unless you find someone who is making good money in the economic down turn or find unique methods of return on investment (legally speaking).

Bend will have its own unique challenges that are new to me.

I will be working with Fresh Air Sports for 2009 cyclocross season to help develop a sustainable series that will add that cyclocross suppliment to the already popular Webcyclery series and not interfere with racers schedules who make the trip over the pass to Cross Crusade or Eugene. Hopefully we can develop a package of good fun and challenge for those who want to race and make it one that is here from year to year.

What is also interesting is that USAC is in town this week reviewing Bend for the USAC Cyclocross National Championship location for 09/10. (I have no inside info on that one) We might have another uprising of cyclocross racers in the area if this comes to fruition, so we will have to have more events locally.

The area is primed with lots of newer riders too, beyond elites and I think a smaller less metro location like Bend is a good place for people to dip their toes in and try cyclocross out.

Should be fun.

I have taken a few weeks off the bike. It was getting really cold in my jeans and jacket. Need to dig through the gear box.

The baby is my excuse now all the time.
Sheer exhaustion from day to day keeps me from getting on and riding the bike.. But not all true cause it is a pure joy to sit and hold my baby girl.

The wife is making up the Ganache for her Truffles at full speed, so I am helping there too, plus shes got to get the business website fired up and get her boxes for packaging the pounds of chocolate to greedy little chocoholic fingers!

The plan is to break out the winter riding gear and steal a few moments on the bike.

My plans to convert my VW squareback to all electric has been put on the shelf longer... last gas milage check it was in the 28/29 mpg range in town. I could easly get it over 30 mpg if I used the parkway to go across town instead of through the lights.

Mr Winter decided to stop through on his way back home from summer vacation and give us a quick dusting of snow. The mountains look nice.

The river trail this morning on the way to work had frosted ledges and corners which made for a chilly morning. Had to break out the thermal underwear!

Ok. Im looking out my window of my office down onto Wall street and see a handful of kids in Orange vests riding by, learning how to ride on the road safely. Something I should be teaching seeing that I am an LCI for League of American Cyclists.

So Lance is back. Hmm
Racing Cross and the Crit in Vegas. (more info on vegas cross)
The cross race last night he took a spill in the grass and placed 20th (*which is not really that bad). The good news is that Ryan Trebon from Bend won the race and fellow Bendite Adam Craig took 3rd.

I am wondering is this going to be a shot in the arm for cycling or just a shot in the shorts as a whirlwind Lance propaganda blast?

Any Lance fans going nuts over this news?

Portlands Naked Earth Friend Gen lady cyclist in the news. (Kare11 news Minneapolis!)
With winter coming her naked jaunts in the street are due to be cut back until next spring.
Seems 911 is getting lots of calls. Oh Horrors!
I love the 911 comment "Beautiful..wish I had her figure, hahaha."

Funny that motorized bikes are all the rage.
Even new ones are being pushed out by Schwinn at interbike

Remember before the motorcycle.. it was the bike with a motor strapped to it? Then it was termed the motorcycle.
I personally am not opposed to them because people are out of cars freeing up space and have less impact on the environment (if built properly). However I am not too keen on the ones that folks put loud zippy tailpipes on and claim loud pipes saves lives..
Whats your thoughts as these become more reality?

Its been time to shed some pounds... Baby, work, schoolin, new biz, selling a house.. so much stuff you forget to take care of yourself when your only source of exercise at fat burnin levels is riding a bike.

I used to be one of those eat whateva you want kinda guys that everyone hated. But a bite of medical reality changed my life for good in that area.
So I whine about myself and then I turned the channel to "The Biggest Loser" (TV is your enemy when you have a baby). And I see some of those poor slobs lost 20 pounds in 2 weeks... what???
It took me months to shed 20 pounds.. granted I am sure it will be harder to lose that much in the coming months for them.. although they eat sleep and crap excercise and diet..

So i am going back to basics of eating. Cutting out the complex foods stuff (cept the beer on occasion).
And increasing my daily ride with the intent to start hitting up the snow when it hits to burn some LBS.

Every morning on my cross bike i roll over thee.
Sand, dirt, dust and sometimes mud and snow.
I pass by fresh smells of mountain air, some days a little smokier than others..
Many smiling faces of joggers beating themselves into the dirt. At least they are not beating their asses into the couch. :)
Lots of dogs off leash and on leash loving the free time.
It sure is nice having that as my start and finish to the work day.

She's been hanging in the garage for months on end. Possibly since last year.
Tubular tires flat, dust on the frame, dried out parts.. ugh.
Well I took her off the hooks, pulled off the tubular wheels and put on some clinchers, greased her up and took her for a ride.

I love that bike.
The funny thing is that cross bike is the first cross frame that I got from Paul over at RockLobster Cycles in Santa Cruz. I think it was back in 2001 when I started getting my ass kicked in the A's and she was of yellow tint.
It was my back up and training bike in following few years until one day when I was running a hooptie singulator system on it and dropped the chain into the spoke and snapped the chainstay off the dropout.
Instead of dumping that frame, Paul knew I wanted to make it a single speed so after begging him, he cut off the ends and welded up some single speed horizontal dropouts and painted her green. With big ole think welds to support my beefy buns.

Got to remember, this was the bike that I jumped off the drop off at the CCCP Pilarcitos race on the coast down in California, and then used it to jump the massive puddle at the Nationals singlespeed race in Portland where I bent my fork... so we never envisioned that this bike would be raced and ridden hard as a trainer and commuter for the next 3 years.. Course the racing was regressed to only a few times per year after the slipup of the back at Dairy farm in Portland in 06. But I still rode the crap out of this bike typically hanging out on mostly mountain bike rides over pretty technical stuff.

So here the bike is again.. Creaky, dirty, scratched and dented. But she is beautiful.
